4'x8' Routermate

Pictured above is our 4 'x 8' Routermate.

The Routermate was designed from the ground up with the sole purpose of routing in mind. It is available in sizes from 2 ’ x 4’ all the way up to 10’ x 40’ (sizes are cutting surface size). The Z-axis has a travel distance of 8.5 inches.  To maintain rigidity the Z-axis bearings are located at the bottom of the axis plate, and do not move away from the material as the Z-axis moves up like most machines on the market today. The standard version of the Routermate is equipped with stepper motors, servos are available as an option.  All drive systems are completely gear driven, with the exception of the Z-axis that is a recirculating ball screw drive. The Y and Z axes have 24 bearings each for linear rigidity, and the X-axis runs on 16 cam follower type bearings.

The Routermate is available in a complete bolt together kit, or if you like you can build your own table and just purchase the Routermate gantry (Y and Z axes).  We can also provide the precision ground X-axis rails for mounting to your table. The gantry portion of the Routermate comes from our factory completely assembled.

Table height adjustment brackets

The Routermate’s table is adjustable in height from 6” to 34”. In addition each of the table cross slat brackets is adjustable left and right, allowing side clamping of larger parts. The cross slats can also be mounted vertically by adjusting the end brackets. This can be used to reduce deflection on heavier materials.

Table height adjustment brackets are shown above.

The table has additional independent vertical stops to allow one person to change the height. (A bottle jack would be necessary for lifting of larger tables)  All the surfaces of the cross brackets are T-slotted for clamping work on any surface. Other table options include: flood and spray coolant, coolant capture/ return membrane for reusing coolant when a flood system is utilized, zoned vacuum table surfaces.

Universal mounting plate retracted

The Routermate’s Z-axis can accept various attachments. This is accomplished with the four mounting holes on the three quarter inch thick main plate.

Above is the universal mounting plate retracted.

Drilling and Tapping

Drilling and Tapping

The Routermate has several options when it comes to drilling and tapping. For the drilling portion you can choose between our light duty milling head or our Milwaukee drill motor capable of drilling ½ holes in steel. For an inexpensive tapping solution our Milwaukee drill motor and “drap” are good for through holes and coarse threads down to size 10-24.
When planning on tapping with the Milwaukee drill motor, you must also purchase our two speed reversing interface box. This allows you to tap at a lower speed than drilling and to reverse the bit when using the tap portion. If you need more precise tapping, our separate tapping head is your best bet! This is also the only way to tap blind holes without changing bits.
The Routermate is capable of having a plasma cutter added in addition to the drilling and or tapping heads. This enables you to produce complete parts without changing tools or moving the parts to another machine in many cases.

The dust collection option pictured here includes the ducting and vinyl skirt for containing most of the cutting debris and dust. Click the photo to see an enlarged view.

Spray Mist Option

Spray Mist Option for Router

This spray mist coolant option is useful when cutting materials that tend to heat up cutting tools or materials that requires lubrication for better surface finishes. Water soluble oils are used, and can be vegetable based so disposal is easier.

Router Motors

Several router motors are available from our base DeWALT 2-1/2 H.P. variable speed 8,000- 24,000 PRM motor, up to 7.5 H.P. 36,000 RPM spindle motors.

Sample Cuts

Bridge side boards, such as the one shown above, typically sell for over $200 a pair in teak, and as much as $500 a pair with the relieved lettering painted in gold and a coat of polyurethane.  Materials are about $30.  These are generally fastened to both side panels of a boat's bridge.

Set up your apartment-sized CNC router in a booth at boat shows, and fill orders while your customers see the rest of the show.  Set up a web site, and sell them on the Internet.  The possibilities are limitless.  This is but one example of the hundreds of categories of products that can be produced with a router mounted on a 3-D Torchmate shape cutting machine.

Routing in AluminumRouting in Plastic

Examples of 2-1/2 D Routing In Aluminum and In Plastic are pictured above. If your needs are true 3-D routing, you will need to purchase either RhinoCAM or BobCAD-CAM for simultaneously moving all three axis.

Single Pass Cut

The above two pictures are a single pass cut, .100” deep, 10 inches per minute travel rate, made with our base DeWALT router motor and a spray mist coolant sprayer. The material is 6061 aluminum. The Z-axis for this cut was 7-1/2” extended.

Software

Software

Many software options are available for the Routermate. If you are currently using drafting software such as AutoCAD, you can import a .DXF file directly into our Routermate Driver Software. You will have the option in our software to select your feed rates, amount of cut per pass, bottom depths, and all the variables necessary to complete 2-1/2 D routing. 2-1/2 D routing is done by moving your X and Y axis to produce your 2-D shape, then indexing your Z axis to the next depth and repeating your X-Y shape again until the desired depth is reached.

Our Routermate Driver Software is capable of starting and stopping the router motor, coolant, and dust collection systems for a more automated process. Our software also can be directly programmed in G-code if that is your preference.

If your needs are true 3-D routing, you will need to purchase either RHINOceres SOLID MODELING SOFTWARE, RhinoCAM or BobCAD-CAM for simultaneously moving all three axis.

ROUTERMATE DRIVER SOFTWARE
This is the software that runs your Routermate machine.  It is not compatible with other systems.  The program automatically converts imported dxf files into G-Code for cutting.  You have full control over cutting speed while cutting.  On-screen torch path simulation occurs in real time while cutting.  A digital read-out tells you where the torch is in inches or metric units at all times.  Click on the small image at right for full details.
Driver software

RHINOceres SOLID MODELING SOFTWARE
Create digital 3-D models of your projects before you start the actual fabrication process.  All parts fit together just as they would in a physical model.  It is possible to rotate the model, zoom in to see the finest detail, and view its components in layers that can be peeled-back one at a time.  It is often almost impossible to tell a 3-D model from the real thing.

RHINOceres SOLID MODELING SOFTWARE
RhinoCAM
RhinoCAM is a general purpose machining program for the general machinist. RhinoCAM includes 2-1/2 axis, 3 Axis, 4 axis and 5 axis operations. This powerful package is ideal for mold, die and tooling, wood working rapid-prototyping and general machining markets and generates G-code to be directly sent to the Torchmate machines. This product boasts of powerful toolpath generation strategies coupled with tools for efficiently controlling the cutting tool for detailed machining capabilities, while not sacrificing ease of use. Has all the basic functionality as well as additional features suitable for demanding users with sophisticated manufacturing requirements.
RHINOCAM
BobCAD-CAM 3-D ROUTING & MILLING SOFTWARE
In addition to being a full-blown computer assisted design (CAD) program, BobCAD renders 2-D images into three dimensional shapes.  It then generates G-Code to create the 3-D pieces with Torchmate's automated Z-axis in conjunction with a router, roto-ZIP tool, engraver, etc.
